Heat pumps in Luxembourg: the complete guide

How it works, which type to choose, whether your home is suitable, what it costs and which subsidies apply? The clear guide to replacing your oil or gas boiler.

How does a heat pump work?

A heat pump captures the heat present in the outside air or in the ground and transfers it indoors to heat your home and your hot water. It burns no fuel.

Its big advantage: for 1 kWh of electricity consumed, it delivers 3 to 4 kWh of heat (the coefficient of performance, or COP). This is what makes it far more economical than an oil or gas boiler.

The types of heat pump

There are three main families, chosen according to your home and budget:

  • Air/Water: the most common. It feeds your radiators or underfloor heating and produces domestic hot water.
  • Geothermal: captures heat from the ground via probes. The highest and most stable efficiency, but a larger investment.
  • Air/Air: heats the room air directly and can also cool in summer, but does not produce domestic hot water.

Is your home suitable?

A heat pump performs best with good insulation and low-temperature emitters (underfloor heating or large radiators). But it also works very well with existing radiators: we assess each home case by case.

The biggest gain is replacing an oil or gas boiler, which unlocks the highest subsidies and sharply cuts your heating bill.

Cost and savings

Expect on average €12,000 to €20,000 fitting included for an air/water heat pump, more for a geothermal solution. The cost depends on the area to be heated and the state of the existing system.

Thanks to the COP, your heating costs drop sharply compared with oil or gas. Paired with solar panels, the heat pump can run partly on your own electricity.

The Klimabonus subsidies for heat pumps

The 2026 amounts are flat rates that depend on the type of pump and on your situation. The subsidy never exceeds 50% of the total cost.

The process, from study to commissioning

Replacing a boiler with a heat pump is planned carefully:

  1. 1Assessment of your current heating, your heat losses and your emitters.
  2. 2Detailed quote with the Klimabonus subsidy and the agreement in principle.
  3. 3Removal of the old boiler and installation of the heat pump.
  4. 4Commissioning, settings and an explanation of how it works.
  5. 5Regular maintenance to ensure performance and longevity.

Frequently asked questions about heat pumps

Is a heat pump efficient in a Luxembourg winter?

Yes. Current models are designed for Luxembourg winters. Efficiency drops slightly in severe cold, but the pump remains far more economical than a fossil-fuel boiler.

Do I have to change my radiators?

Not necessarily. Many installations run with the existing radiators. During the study we check whether an adaptation is useful.

Is it noisy?

Modern units are very quiet. The location of the outdoor unit is chosen to minimise any disturbance.

How much subsidy can I get?

Up to €10,000 for an air/water pump and €12,000 for a geothermal pump replacing a fossil-fuel boiler, within 50% of the cost.

Is it compatible with solar panels?

Yes, it is even ideal: part of the pump's electricity can come from your panels, which reduces your bill further.
