Solar panels in Luxembourg: the complete guide

Which power to choose, how much it costs, how quickly it pays off and whether you need a battery? Everything a Luxembourg homeowner should know before getting started.

How does photovoltaic work?

The panels turn sunlight into electricity (direct current). An inverter converts it into alternating current usable in the home. You consume this electricity on site (self-consumption) and the surplus is fed into the grid.

In Luxembourg, the average yield is around 950 kWh per installed kWp per year. So an installation produces electricity all year round, even on overcast days, peaking in summer.

Which power for your home?

Expect about 2 panels per kWp, roughly 5 m² of roof. A Luxembourg household consumes on average 4,000 to 5,000 kWh per year, which matches a 5 to 6 kWp installation.

If you have (or plan) an electric car or a heat pump, aim instead for 8 to 10 kWp. A south-facing roof is ideal, but an east-west orientation still performs very well.

Quick benchmark

6 kWp ≈ 14 panels, about 30 m² of roof and close to 5,700 kWh produced per year.

How much does an installation cost in Luxembourg?

A turnkey installation costs on average €1,300 to €1,800 per kWp, fitting included. For 6 kWp, expect between €9,000 and €11,000 before subsidies.

Good news: VAT on photovoltaics is 0%, and the Klimabonus subsidy (deducted directly from the invoice in 2026) strongly reduces the net cost. For 6 kWp, the subsidy reaches about €5,742.

Profitability and payback

The real profitability lever is self-consumption: every kWh you produce and use at home is a kWh you don't buy from the grid at €0.20–0.25.

With the subsidies and 0% VAT, payback is generally between 8 and 12 years, for panels guaranteed and productive for 25 years or more. The rest of their lifespan is near-free electricity.

Should you add a battery?

A battery stores the midday surplus to release it in the evening. It is especially worthwhile if no one is home during the day: it raises self-consumption from about 30% to 60–70%.

Expect about 1 to 1.5 kWh of battery per 1,000 kWh consumed per year. The Klimabonus subsidy for the battery goes up to €2,250.

The process, from study to commissioning

A well-run solar project takes a few weeks. The steps:

  1. 1Study of your roof, your consumption and your orientation.
  2. 2Detailed quote with the subsidies already deducted.
  3. 3Agreement in principle and administrative steps (we handle them).
  4. 4Installation of the panels and the inverter, usually in 1 to 2 days.
  5. 5Commissioning, grid connection with Creos and production monitoring.

Frequently asked questions about solar

How many panels for 6 kWp?

About 14 panels, roughly 30 m² of roof, for an annual output of around 5,700 kWh.

Does the roof absolutely have to face south?

No. South is optimal, but an east-west installation produces very well and spreads output across the day, which favours self-consumption.

What happens to the electricity I don't use?

The surplus is fed into the grid. A battery lets you store part of it for the evening rather than feeding it all in.

How long do the panels last?

25 to 30 years, with production warranties often over 25 years. Profitability continues well after payback.

Do you produce electricity in winter?

Yes, output is reduced but real. Profitability is calculated over the whole year, not over a single month.
